Frequently Asked QuestionsHow is Green Armitage different from other "eco-friendly" developments out there?Green wasn't an add-on or an afterthought. All decisions regarding the development of Green Armitage were made while asking the question "Is it more environmentally responsible than what is conventionally done?" We believe that no building can reasonably be called "green" if it lacks an energy-efficient high-performance envelope. Energy performance is the "cake" that green building is based upon. Everything else is the "frosting." If there is no cake to put the frosting on, there is no reason to celebrate. Third-party testing will allow us to prove that Green Armitage performs to the high standards set by the team. Are there solar panels? No. And here's why... Currently, the addition of a PV system is not cost effect for either the builder or the buyer. The technology for PV (photovoltaic) panels is rapidly improving. In a very short time, there will be panels available that produce much more energy more efficiently and cost less than what is now on the market. Green Armitage is "pre-piped" to allow easy addition of a solar panel system when the technology has reached a point at which it is cost effective for the condo association to purchase one. Patience now will pay big dividends in the near future. Why are local materials important? The basis of "green" is the reduction of energy use. The longer the distance something is shipped, the more fuel is used to get it to it's destination. Buying materials locally reduces overall energy use. This is why, for example, rapidly renewable bamboo shipped from China is not the most environmentally responsible choice for flooring in North America. Why are you going for both Energy Star and LEED certifications? Green building certifications are a way of measuring the "greenness" of a home. Energy Star focuses on energy efficiency (and therefore pollution reduction) and has stringent performance criteria regarding energy use and indoor air quality (the American Lung Association healthy home standard). LEED is broader in its focus and includes many different definitions of "green." We felt the marriage of these two systems best served our purposes. Is there still time to customize my home? Yes!
