Outstanding Environmental Performance

  • According to current computer modeling, the building exceeds the EPA's Residential Energy Star standard by over 90%, which gives buyers a significant energy savings (and reduced carbon footprint) over a similar conventionally-built home. The building is also pre-piped for renewable energy systems that, if installed, potentially make the building a zero net-metered energy structure. Third-party testing of completed building will determine final energy performance.
  • Revolutionary ELFI wall system for super-efficient insulation.
  • ELFI exterior walls perform at R-40  and roofing panels at R-60 thermo-insulation values. (Chicago code requires only R-13)
  • Kone elevator uses 60% less energy than a hydraulic elevator.
  • High-efficiency HVAC and tankless water heaters create a high level of comfort with less energy.
  • Low or no-VOC paints, finishes and sealants as well as formaldehyde-free custom cabinets help prevent indoor air pollution.
  • High percentage of recycled and recyclable building materials used. Examples include:
    • post-consumer recycled drywall
    • light steel frame contains up to 60% post-consumer recycled material
    • tiles in kitchens and baths contain 55% to 100% post-consumer and/or post-industrial recycled glass
    • ELFI walls and roofing panels are manufactured entirely from man-made materials that contain recycled content. Waste is fully recycled during the manufacturing process and the product is entirely recyclable at the end of the building's life cycle.
    • Optional Paperstone countertops look like natural stone, but contain at least 50% post-consumer recycled paper
  • Efficient plumbing fixtures, including dual-flush toilets, use significantly less water than conventional fixtures.
  • Storm water runs to ground where it percolates down into the porous soil instead of Chicago's overwhelmed storm sewers.
  • Building will have a green roof which requires no water or maintanence after a short initial establishment phase (and which allows for easy access to the roof surface in case it is needed).
  • Most materials produced within 500 miles of building site, supporting the local regional economy and cutting use of fossil fuels for shipping.
  • Building is seeking Energy Star, LEED and Chicago Green Homes certifications.
